UK new car sales rose past 162,288 months, an increase of 7.9% compared with May 2011, on the basis of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
It was the biggest percentage increase in the records of 23 months, thanks largely to an increase of 14.3% in private sales, according to the SMMT.
The May increase, total 2012 to 868,166 - an increase of 2.6% over the same period last year.
The fleet market rose 4.8%, ending a three-month decline.
